 Analytical Integrity: Confidence In the UK millions of measurements are made in analytical chemistry laboratories every year. Analysts are required to monitor the efficacy of a manufacturing process, biological or environmental process by quantifying the presence or absence of various chemicals accurately and reliably. The suspicion that values achieved are different from those expected will often lead to further, possibly unnecessary investigation where there is a lack of confidence in the measured value. When conducting an analytical measurement the analyst is concerned with accuracy and precision. This is achieved by using equipment that can be seen as fit for the purpose, and showing when, how and what was done and by whom to achieve the result. What is required of the analyst is confidence that the correct result has been realised, usually by demonstrating that the values achieved were determined by following a precise standard operating procedure (S.O.P.), showing traceability to known standards, through the use of instrumentation which is maintained and has established performance criteria. To achieve this, primary sample measuring devices whether gravimetric or volumetric are validated at the time of use, are calibrated to national standards, and whose performance has been verified by the instrument manufacturers approved service and calibration agent. Those laboratories that use a Total Quality Management (TQM) system are able to demonstrate through recording traceability that they have consistency and quantifiable links between measure results of the measured standard references, and that of the measured sample.
